My grandparents came to the U.S. looking for work and to leave the farm in Canada. It is always funny to tell my students that my grandparents are immigrants from Canada. They don’t think that my grandparents are “real” immigrants, even though my grandparents came for the same reasons as their parents: to work and make a better life for their children. My great, great grandparents came from Ireland because of the potato famine in the 1840s, so maybe that counts!
